Schengen Tourist Visa: Where to Apply, Documents and Timing

Plan a European trip with a practical Schengen application checklist, main-destination rule and official links for international travellers.

October 8, 2026 · Travel World Editorial · International audience

Start with your own circumstances: passport nationality and type, country of legal residence, travel purpose, dates, route and previous permissions. These guides are for short tourist trips; they do not determine your individual eligibility. Official authorities decide applications and admission. Travel World does not process visas.

A Paris–Rome holiday sounds straightforward until you ask which country should receive your visa application. The useful starting point is your actual itinerary, not whichever appointment looks easiest to obtain. This guide covers the Schengen destinations in Travel World: France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Czechia, Austria, Hungary and Greece.

First check whether a visa is required

The European Commission’s Schengen application guide links to nationality rules and exceptions. A short-stay visa generally covers up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Visa-exempt travellers must check their own entry and authorisation requirements; exemption does not mean unrestricted stays.

Choose the correct consulate

For a multi-country visit, apply to the country where you spend the longest time; for equal stays, use the first country visited. Normally apply through the consulate responsible for your country of legal residence. Use the Commission’s country links to reach the relevant national authority and its local application instructions.

Allow room for appointments and processing

The published application window is no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before travel. Normal processing is 15 days, potentially extending to 45. Appointment availability is a separate planning issue. The standard adult fee is €90, with reductions, exemptions and possible service-centre charges. Recheck the applicable fee before paying.

Build a consistent application

Expect a passport, form, compliant photograph, medical insurance and evidence of purpose, accommodation, means and intended return. The local checklist controls. Make a simple itinerary showing cities, nights and transport; ensure it matches the reservations you submit. Explain sponsorship clearly if another person pays. A clear folder is more useful than a large pile of unexplained documents.

Check the permission after approval

Read the validity dates, entry count and authorised stay before departing. A visa’s expiry date and permitted number of days are different checks. Leave time for passport return and review transit conditions for any stop outside your destination region.

A handy preparation checklist

These are preparation prompts, not a universal document list. Follow the checklist issued by the embassy or authorised application channel for your situation. Never fabricate a reservation, employment letter or financial document. If information changes after submission, ask the authority how to correct it rather than filing an inconsistent second application.

Official sources & checking your own rules
