The cheapest nightly number is not always the cheapest stay. A useful hotel comparison begins with the same dates, guests and room requirements, then adds the costs and conditions that change your decision. This checklist is Travel World’s editorial method for comparing options; it does not describe a universal Expedia policy or promise that a particular booking platform has the lowest rate.
1. Make the searches comparable
Enter identical check-in and check-out dates for every hotel. Include the correct number of adults, children and their ages. Check whether the displayed result is one room or several. A six-night stay and a seven-night stay are different purchases, even when their nightly averages look similar.
Check the currency and whether you are looking at the stay total or a nightly figure. Keep the original currency in your notes if you convert prices. Your payment provider’s exchange rate and any conversion charges can differ from a rough budgeting conversion. Do not compare one converted estimate with another booking’s final payable amount as though they are equivalent.
2. Compare the room, not just the property
Two rates at the same hotel may buy different experiences. Check bed configuration, maximum occupancy, room size, window availability, private or shared bathroom, smoking status and access arrangements. A balcony, view, breakfast or refundable rate may belong to a specific category rather than to every room.
Save the name of the room you intend to reserve. If a feature is essential, confirm it is included in that category before payment. For families, verify sleeping arrangements rather than assuming a room advertised for two adults accommodates children on the same terms.
3. Build a simple comparison sheet
| Item | Hotel A | Hotel B |
|---|---|---|
| Displayed stay total | Record the total and currency | Use identical dates and guests |
| Additional payable charges | List any charges shown separately | Check when and how they are paid |
| Breakfast | Included, optional or unavailable | Calculate for the whole party |
| Cancellation | Exact deadline and conditions | Compare the same flexibility |
| Transport | Airport and sightseeing journeys | Include the final hotel connection |
| Room essentials | Beds, bathroom, access and size | Compare an equivalent product |
Do not add taxes a second time if the displayed total already includes them. Conversely, do not treat the headline as the entire budget if the booking details show separate charges. Record the wording of each price rather than relying on an assumption about how every listing is formatted.
4. Put a value on flexibility
A non-refundable room may look appealing when plans are settled. A more flexible option may be better value when flights, visas or leave dates remain uncertain. Read the exact cancellation deadline, its time zone and any charges after that deadline. “Reserve now” and “pay later” do not by themselves establish free cancellation.
For a practical comparison, write down what would happen if you cancelled three days before arrival. If you cannot answer from the booking conditions, resolve that uncertainty before buying. Compare flight and hotel conditions separately unless the product explicitly provides a combined arrangement.
5. Count the journeys your location creates
A hotel saving can disappear into repeated transfers. Sketch the airport arrival, the busiest sightseeing day and the departure. Include the cost and inconvenience of reaching the property from the station or pickup point. For a family, multiply per-person transport costs by the correct party size.
Our Istanbul area comparison and Kuala Lumpur area comparison apply this location-first approach. They help narrow the search without claiming that one neighbourhood is best for every traveller.
6. Recheck the final booking screen
Before confirming an Expedia booking, recheck the property, dates, guest names, room category, currency, total, payment schedule and cancellation terms shown for that reservation. Save the confirmation and use the booking provider’s instructions if you need support. A price saved yesterday is not evidence that the same room is available today.
Our ten-city budget hotel page provides dated references for comparison. Use those as starting points and run a fresh search for your own trip. The best choice is the stay that meets your requirements at an acceptable total cost—not the option with the smallest number in the first search result.

This is an original comparison checklist. It makes no claim about a specific room rate, discount or platform-wide refund policy; the conditions displayed for your booking govern that reservation.
